About Pacific Sole Futsal

Pacific Sole Futsal is a youth futsal academy based in San Diego, California, founded with a clear mission: To bring South American futsal to youth footballers (soccer players) in the San Diego, CA area. There are other futsal organizations in the county, but none that TEACH players how to PROPERLY play futsal or about the significance of the CULTURE of futsal, and how it relates to football. We educate and train players in the authentic, culturally correct, and academically sound way the game is meant to be played (specifically aligning with South American futsal). This style of futsal is incredible for youth footballers’ development and is a massive difference maker in strengthening a footballer’s abilities on the outdoor pitch.

Our Philosophy

With futsal comes an essence of the sport of football. Futsal is about a purity of enjoyment of the game, of creativity, of laughter, of skill and of competing. Passion! It is a sport that is rooted in the streets of South America, a sport developed by the people for the people. We bring this atmosphere to our classes and sessions. It allows our players and students to be sponges that soak in everything meaningful, enjoyable and cultural about futsal (and therefore football). All of this occurring while we teach top, top quality technique, thinking, movement, outnumbering in attack, defending and working together in defense, understanding and identifying space and much more. And on top of the coaches teaching all of these fantastic ideals, a lot of the development for the players occurs by simply having them there to play futsal. They will come to figure out many things on their own. This is another cornerstone of futsal, learning the game by doing not just being told or taught how to. This combination of our atmosphere and teaching methods (and the players’ own autonomy) makes for an incredibly rich and nourishing environment that will see your youth footballer’s abilities skyrocket with consistent attendance. We are so excited to build something incredible here in San Diego! Please join us for a Class or Clinic asap so you can see for yourself how valuable Pacific Sole Futsal will be for you.

Futsal is more than just a smaller, modified version of soccer. It is a sport of its own, with deep roots in global football history. Futsal has its own professional leagues, national teams and FIFA Futsal World Cup. Played on streets, courts, and in gyms around the world, futsal is where many of the world’s greatest footballers began their journey. Legends like Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modrić, Eden Hazard, Arjen Robben, Zinedine Zidane, and Kylian Mbappé all developed their foundational skills through futsal. And these players attribute many of their abilities to their time spent playing futsal.

At Pacific Sole Futsal, we don’t just play futsal—we TEACH it. Our players learn the game the right way:

  • Culturally, by honoring the style and spirit in which it was created. Futsal is a street game by the people for the people. It is a game of freedom, creativity, enjoyment and displaying skills. Futsal can be played almost anywhere with a few people and a ball. This is how futsal became so big, first in South America, and then around the whole world. The spirit and culture of the game is a vital part of our education and makes a big impact on the understanding of the sport of futsal, and also football (soccer).

  • Technically, by mastering the fundamentals of futsal - i.e. ball control and ball manipulation, creative movement, proper defending, working together in 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s, etc. - honing and encouraging creativity, and understanding the importance of executing the simple fundamentals without question in every skill we perform.

    • One of the most vital technical skills of futsal is, when receiving the ball from a teammate, stopping or trapping the ball with the bottom or SOLE of the foot. You do not trap or stop the ball as you do in outdoor with the inside of the foot. Always always always receive the ball with the SOLE of the foot. This one foundational skill and technique in futsal develops the coordination of the player incredibly! As it takes much more coordination, balance and ability to receive the ball with the SOLE while playing. While it may not seem like a big deal, we assure you it is. Us coaches are sticklers about this skill in our sessions and focus on it a lot. Hence the name Pacific Sole Futsal (a fun and clever play on words for Pacific Soul Futsal, a name which we almost chose as we feel it captures our calm, cool, inviting ethos well). We have come to really enjoy our organization name and hope the play on words is not lost on those who read or hear it!

  • Academically, through a curriculum that supports motor skills and sport-specific coordination, intelligent, quick decision-making, game concepts and many other aspects of comprehensive player development (i.e. game psychology and cleverness or speed and agility, spatial awareness and identification, etc.).

Why Futsal?

Futsal is fast, fun, and one of the best ways to develop as a footballer. It sharpens technique, quick thinking, and overall coordination—all in a high-paced, small-sided format.

Benefits of Futsal:

  • Many touches on ball, faster skill growth

  • Very quick decisions, smarter play

  • Better balance, agility, coordination and motor skills

  • Spatial understanding and awareness

  • Highly improves and translates directly to the 11v11 outdoor game of football (soccer)

  • Keeps kids active, engaged, and having fun the whole time. Very minimal standing around or not participating in exercises for students and players

Futsal isn't just a game—it’s a foundation for great players. Here is a widely shared sentiment in elite footballing areas of the globe: Strong footballers don’t always make good futsal players, but strong futsal players ALWAYS make good footballers.

Futsal is about a spirit, a creativity, a fire, an enjoyment, a passion. It is players enjoying a freedom on the court and feeling a love for the game while playing. Futsal, done right, is the root and center of everything beautiful in football (soccer). It is the ultimate teacher of everything to be loved about sport, life and football.

Thank you for considering Pacific Sole Futsal. We’re excited to be part of your player’s journey—and to build something meaningful for the San Diego community!

“During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was FUTSAL. The small playing area helped me improve my close control, and whenever I played futsal, I felt free. If it wasn’t for FUTSAL, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.”

Cristiano Ronaldo

“As a little boy in Argentina, I played FUTSAL on the streets and for my club. It was tremendous fun, and it really helped me become who I am today.”

Lionel Messi

FUTSAL had a massive influence on me when I was growing up. It’s a very demanding game and it really helped to develop my technique, speed of thought, and ability to perform moves in tight spaces. I think FUTSAL is a fundamental part of a footballer’s life.”

Neymar

“Everything started for me on the small pitches. We played on concrete, in tight spaces, with no rules - just creativity and competition. That’s where I learned to think fast, move fast, and play with heart. Small-sided football shaped the player I am today.”
